Lacking the frontispiece of Gaunt in vol. 2 and the half title in that volume, otherwise complete with the two engravings of Chaucer and the index and list of “valuable books” published by Phillips at the rear of vol. 2. . Godwin’s signature and several words in his hand on a label affixed to the front free endpaper of vol. 2. Slight tears on the right side of pp. 347-8 and 531-2 in vol. 2, Japan tissue repair on the inner leaves at pp. 256-7 of that vol. [Hammond 38; CBEL II, 1250; Ebert 8644; Lowndes 905; Allibone 685; Brunet II, 1640].

William Godwin was an English journalist, philosopher, novelist, a proponent of anarchism and utilitarianism, husband of feminist writer Mary Wollstonecraft, and father of famed author Mary Shelley, the author of Frankenstein.
