Nicholas Murray Butler was an American philosopher, diplomat, and educator. Butler was a prominent figure in the development of the modern American university and of public secondary education. He was president of Columbia University (forty-four-year tenure), president of the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace and a recipient of the Nobel Peace Prize in 1931.
