William Black was a British novelist born in Glasgow, Scotland. During his lifetime, Black's novels were immensely popular and compared favourably with those of Anthony Trollope.

• Letter stuck to a card under an oval photo of Black.
• ALS to Morten, [after 1874], “Eva is under the impression you told her you had not heard of this intimation; but if you did send it, it must have been forwarded, & is probably now lying in some post-office on the Sound of Mull. However it does no matter much…Will you please thank Mina for the Wordsworth sonnet. I had not seen it; & must now quote it entire somewhere, to evade a charge of plagiarism.”
