Eric Clifford Ambler was an English author of thrillers, in particular English spy novels, who introduced a new realism to the genre. Many authors of international thrillers have acknowledged a debt to Ambler, including Graham Greene, Ian Fleming, John le Carré, Julian Symons, Alan Furst and Frederick Forsyth. Also working as a screenwriter, Ambler used the pseudonym Eliot Reed for books cowritten with Charles Rodda.
• ALS to J.C. Crosby, May 1986: “I am returning the books you sent me for signature. They are signed. I would not be willing to sign further copies of my books in this way. The trouble of repacking them and then standing in a Post Office queue to post them back is, at my time of life, unacceptable.”
