Baron Lahontan (1666-1713), entered the French military and arrived in the New World in 1683 as a teenage soldier. He spent most of the next 20 years exploring the Great Lakes region, and he became adept in the Indian languages. A writer for the North American Review (quoted in Sabin) states "the Baron seems to have been an ardent and enterprising character, with more wit than discretion, but that his accounts bear every mark of authenticity, and are quite confirmed by contemporary as well as subsequent writers on the same country."
