Séminaire de St. Hyacinthe, Quebec antique photo collection

Photo collection of 20 antique photographs dating from circa 1890s to 1920s, specifically 17 antique cabinet card photographs and 3 real photo postcards (priests or seminarians in cassocks).

The 17 cabinet card photographs vary in size from 200 × 230 cm to 105 × 125 cm (total measurements include cardstock mounts). The photographs include seminarians and staff, class photos (5 photos, one dated 1905-06), a reunion collage (1926), costumed theatrical productions (2 photos), studio portraits, students in their rooms, a woman wearing a hat, and a girl in communion dress. With the exception of one faded photo of three men (verso reads “Renvoyez par le retour de la malle 25cts, A.A. Racicot, art. photo, Canada Hotel, Coaticook, Que.”), the photographs are in good condition with varying wear, generally bright and clean. People in the photos are unidentified, and most photos are undated.

Séminaire de St. Hyacinthe, Quebec is one of the oldest secondary schools reserved exclusively for the education of boys. The Séminaire de St. Hyacinthe was founded in 1811 by Father Antoine Girouard. It was incorporated as an institution in 1833. From 1880 to 1922, an affiliation with Laval University allowed the students to obtain a bachelor's degree in arts. A similar affiliation continued with the University of Montreal from 1922 to 1968.
