ONE OF A KIND PERSONAL ITEM OF A TALENTED SCOTTISH EMIGRANT
William Doughtie A.R.C.A. was born in Edinburgh, Scotland in 1846 Edinburgh and came to Canada in 1870. He was a draftsman, painter, bookbinder and designer of textiles and wall coverings.
Doughtie's sketch and scrap book with pencil drawings and many newspaper clippings contains the following items:

A series of The Toledo East Side Ohio newspaper (active 1870's) articles each in letter form, written by William Doughtie on his voyage from New York to Glasglow as a passenger and the experiences that goes with the journey. The Toledo East Side newspaper published Fridays, starting publishing his letters weekly in the newspaper starting on November 3, 1876. Perhaps this was Doughtie's creative way to get paid for taking a voyage back to his native Scotland.

• ART IN TORONTO. The sixth annual exhibition of the Ontario Society of Artist was opened by His Excellency Earl Dufferin in person...Dufferin-Art is a matter of matter of feeling rather than science and nothing is so difficult in words as those feelings which subjects of art evoke within our hearts...No.79 "Her Bible True" by Wm. Doughtie, is an interesting and pleasing picture, representing as it does, a subject that commands respect at first sight. The window on the table and the figure of the old lady with the Good Book are feelingly represented.
• ONTARIO SOCIETY OF ARTISTS Water colours concluded. Mr. Doughtie, whose black and white sketches have already been noticed, and who has for a water-colour a scene "On the Frith of Forth" [about two miles north of Edinburgh].
• ONTARIO SOCIETY OF ARTISTS Drawings in Black and White and Arcitiectural Designs. Near by are several outline pencil sketches in South Wales by William Doughtie, formerly of Edinburgh : these are fairly chosen sketches, and would have been in most cases excellent subjects for painting.
William Doughtie was born in Scotland and studied art under Hodder, at the Government Art School there, for six years, during which time he successfully passed the Kingston examinations, and obtained the British Goverment Science and Art Certificates of competency to teach drawing. His advanced studies in Light and Shadow, drawings, from the antique, and original designs of conventionalized flora, embracing harmony of color, applicable to industrial art, were awarded numerous medals and other prizes in the National competitions. He has exhibited in the Royal Scottish Academy and Albert Art Institute, the catalogues of which show several works from his pencil.
He came to Canada in 1870, and devoted much of his time to original practical designs for book-covers, wall paper, textile fabrics, etc. These designs were awarded a silver medal at the Cincinnati exposition in 1873; five bronze medals and several diplomas at other exhibitions in the United States; and a bronze medal at the Dominion exhibition in 1879. He was elected a member of the Ontario Society of Artists in 1876 and assisted as an instructor in the Dominion Art School.
Recrossing the Atlantic, he spent two years visiting the famous art galleries, museums, and exhibitions of Europe, and in studying the practical application and actual working on ornamental design as practiced in the leading lace-curtain, damask-weaving, wall-paper, and carpet manufactories and leading publishing houses, some of which be formerly designed for previous to his coming to this country.
Returning to Toronto in 1879, he was appointed a member of the Royal Canadian Academy of Arts, at the first exhibition of which his designs were awarded the Governor-General's medal, and also a money prize. At the exhibition of the Academy, he exhibits ten frames, containing nearly 100 practical designs. In 1881, while was living in Toronto, some of his views of Cleveland (Cuyahoga) were published in the Canadian Illustrated News, Montreal. In 1883 he was list as an Associate Designer in the Royal Canadian Academy of Art catalogue. He died in Orlando, Florida.
