Jean Baptiste Monnoyer [J Baptiste] (1634-1699) was a Franco-Flemish painter who specialised in flower pieces. He achieved early success with his flower paintings, usually working from nature (plein-air). He was accepted into the Royal Academy of Painting before his 30th birthday! He was involved in decorations of French royal palaces, including Versailles, then went to England to work on Montagu House (later the British Museum). He also painted floral designs for Kensington Palace and Hampton Court. Although Monnoyer is credited with the design of all his prints, there is some discussion as to who did the actual engravings.
Nicolas Robert is considered one of the most important European botanical artists. He was a French miniaturist and engraver. In 1664 he was appointed as "peintre ordinaire de Sa Majesté pur la miniature" (Painter of Miniatures) to Louis XIV.
Louis Tessier who was born in Paris in 1719, was a noted draftsman and painter of flowers. He designed for the Manufacture National des Gobelins, a tapestry factory located in Paris and they list him as a flower painter and created illustrations for books on natural science.
