Autograph letter signed. Three pages, 4-1/2 x 7-1/4. Dated London 29th August 1827 written to the Duke of Rutland. Written when Commander in Chief of the British army, regretting that his commitments to matters in Portugal and of cial visits prevent him from going to Belvoir Castle to see him.

John Henry Manners, 5th Duke of Rutland (1778-1857). He was also a prominent owner and breeder of Thoroughbred racehorses. His most successful horse was Cadland, which won The Derby in 1828. He was appointed Knight, Order of the Garter (K.G.) in 1803. He was Trustee of the British Museum. He held the office of Recorder of Grantham and Scarborough. He gained the rank of Colonel in the Leicestershire Militia.
