Charles Dudley Warner was an American essayist, novelist, lawyer. After the Clemens family moved to Hartford in 1871, Warner and Samuel Langhorne Clemens (Mark Twain) became friends, and collaborated on The Gilded Age (1873–74). It is for his share in this book, the first novel by either writer, that Warner is now best remembered. Warner was assistant editor (1860) and editor (1861-7) of The Hartford Press, and after The Press was merged into The Hartford Courant, was co-editor with Joseph R. Hawley; in 1884 he joined the editorial staff of Harper's Magazine, for which he conducted "The Editor's Drawer" until 1892, when he took charge of "The Editor's Study." He died in Hartford on the 20th of October 1900.

• ALS (2 pp.) to Guy, 20 May 1863, re refusal to publish a poem, accepts his invitation, his wife will have to visit in Syracuse.
• ALS to Mr. Holt, 13 May 1878, asking Holt to visit him that evening. • ALS to the Record of the Year, n.d., re sending poems to the editor of the paper. Frayed at the edges and 3 small holes at the middle.
• ALS to Warner from L.W. Dunkelspiel, 6 January 1892, asking for Warner’s autograph, signed on verso: “Yours sincerely | Chas. Dudley Warner | Hartford | Jan 8th 1892.”
• ALS to Miss Paget [Vernon Lee, pseud of Violet Paget], 18 May [1895], saying that he would be pleased to have lunch with her.
• ALS to Miss Rantram?, 10 December 1896, that he and his wife are accept the invitation of the Women’s Press Association on the 17th (photo print of Warner on the same page).
• ALS (3 pp.) to Mr. Dodge, 24 January 1897, re their shared anxiety about the arbitration treaty.
• ALS to Mr. Round, 15 January 1898, re his being in New York for the annual meeting but his mistaking the date of the meeting. Bottom of ALS, "yours Sincerely Charles Dudley Warner" in blue ink with photo print of Warner.
• TLS to Stanley C. Crafts, 7 January 1897, declining to lecture in Chicago.

Deacon, Hartford, 11 January 1894, politely declining an invitation, pasted on the front free endpaper of volume 1. Deacon’s signature on the verso of this endpaper.
