A RARE AND IMPORTANT EARLY QUEBEC COLLECTION OF 3,900 DOCUMENTS

The Honorable Judge James Reid was born in Scotland and came to Canada around 1788. He was called to the bar of Lower Canada in 1794 and in 1807 was appointed a judge of the Court of King’s Bench at Montreal. He filled the judicial office of one of the Judges of the Court of King's Bench, Lower Canada, for a period of thirty-three years, fifteen of which he presided as Chief Justice. During that time he handled many legal cases including many Fur Trade related cases including that of the North West Company. James Reid was one of the Trustees of the McGill estate. After relinquishing office, Reid and his family visited Europe and while in England, he was offered a knighthood by Queen Victoria, but he declined the honour. Reid married in 1808. His wife Elizabeth (Betsy) was the sister of Hon. William McGillivray (1764-1825). Judge Reid, was also the nephew-in-law to Simon McTavish. In 1810 he purchased a large property from the notary, Pierre Panet, After her husband's death in 1825, Elizabeth built the Reid wing of the Montreal General Hospital in 1848/49, Manor House and the Grounds are now Sohmer Park.

Appears connected to above case. 2 A.L.s. signed letters from P. Byrne, Point Oliver, at Sir John's Country House, 5th March 1807. (2d same date, 10 o'clock at night). Is collecting Sir John's seigneurial rents, and wants 2 summons made out. Mentions death of Lees [?], and states it will be a loss to both the Indian Dept. & the Executive Council Appears to be connected to the above case. The documents refer to the eligibility of a group of men in Canada to make claim for losses due to confiscations in the American Revolution. The men were United Empire Loyalists and left the Mohawk Valley of New York. They apparently claimed that they owned the land left behind. These depositions are from men who swore that the petitioners did not own the land on which they resided in the Mohawk Valley. They were actuallv tenants on land owned by Sir William Johnson. One of the witnesses to this was Sir John Johnson, Sir William's son. One of the pivotal questions which arose was the existence of the tenancy agreements and/or title deeds to these lands. Sir John noted that these vital papers were placed in a trunk and buried in the garden behind Johnson Hall when the family fled to Montreal. When they returned several years later, the trunk was full of water and the papers beyond salvaging. This was attested to by the gardener who had buried them. The outcome of the case is not included nor the claim of the claimants. There is how ever a list of the questions asked of the deponents. Two additional papers were short notes of William Claus, a third was just a note.
