INTERESTING COLLECTION OF AN IMPORTANT AMERICAN AUTHOR
Henry Wadsworth Longfellow was the author of Evangeline, The Song of Hiawatha, and many poetry collections, Longfellow (1807-1882) was America’s greatest poet of the nineteenth century. He was also a translator, educator, and novelist.
The collection consists of 53 items dating from 1850 to 1911 specifically, 3 letters, 4 books, 2 Autograph albums, 27 Photo cards (6 CVD’s, 4 Cabinet Cards, 19 Post cards), 5 pieces of sheet music, 4 others (card, first day of issue envelope with 3 Longfellow stamps and reading circle/statue association memberships, 2 calendars, 2 cigar labels and 2 Engraved Prints
3 Letters:
• ALS to his publisher, “Cambridge July 2 1850. Please deliver to the bearer a set of my books in linen binding and pass to my account. Henry W. Longfellow. To Messrs. Ticknor & Co Boston.”
• ALS addressed My Dear Sir [Leonard Brown], 18 August 1879, thanking Brown for sending Poems of the Prairies and that Longfellow looks forward to reading it.
• ALS by L.P. (Léon-Pamphile) LeMay regarding Longfellow. 1 page written in French. 5 x 7-7/8 inches. On Cabinet du Bibliothecairie de la Legislature de Québec dated Québec, 9 April 1890. LeMay is responding to a request to serialize Longfellow's material. Small paper clip mark on top left of paper otherwise very good condition. Pamphile LeMay originally translated Évangéline. Translation of Henry W. Longfellow's Acadian poem in 1865, revised in 1870. L.P. (Léon-Pamphile) LeMay was a lawyer, librarian, writer, poet and translator. He was one of the most important fiqures of French Canadian Literature from the 1860's until the second decade of the twentieth century.

Brown cloth, paper label on spine, black spots on lower board, minor damage to top of spine, small piece missing from front free endpaper, foxing throughout.
• Hyperion, A Romance. New-York: Published by Samuel Colman, 1839. First edition. BAL 12064; Wright I, 1707. Setting B, no priority assigned. 2 volumes: [4], 213, [3 (blank)]; [4], 226 pp. Untrimmed. Original drab boards with printed paper title labels (faded somewhat) to spines. Brown endpapers. General wear and soiling to bindings. Paper chipping at spine ends. Prior owner signature vol I. Foxing. Piece torn and missing on one leaf at the end of vol. II. A very good set.
• Evangeline. Longfellow and Carolyn Sherwin Bailey. Springfield, Mass.: Milton Bradley Company, 1922. Dark blue cloth in pictorial jacket (slightly torn and chipped), otherwise in very good condition. Longfellow and Carolyn Sherwin Bailey. With introduction and prose version by Bailey and illustrated with scenes from the moving picture by William Fox, featuring Miriam Cooper.
• Voices of the Night. Cambridge: John Owen, 1839. Brown paper boards with paper label on the spine. Upper board repaired and reattached. Longfellow's first book of poems. BAL 12065.

• Companion Autographs (Perry Mason & Co, 1877), album containing facsimile autograph sentiments from celebrities (Longfellow, Lincoln, Alcott), with actual written sentiments from unknown people, upper board detached from the text block.
• The Longfellow Album, illustrated brown paper boards with a Longfellow motif, several pages in color with his poems, autographs and written sentiments in the album addressed to Annis, who lived in Columbus, Ohio, 1885-8.
