• James Montgomery. Greenland, and Other Poems. London: Printed by Strahan and Spottiswoode for Longman, Hurst, Rees, Orme, and Brown, 1819. First edition. [8 adverts], xii, 250,  pp.; author’s autograph and obituary notice affixed to the half title. Original paper boards, spine ends chipped, front hinge weak; good condition otherwise. Signed by Anne Vernon on the title page.
Includes an ALS addressed My dear Sir, sent from 13 Pembroke Place, Liverpool, [circa 1834?], in which Mongomery says that he has accepted an invitation to occupy for a few weeks Mr. Almond’s Episcopal church at Glasgow and that he will spend the winter in Dublin.
The major part of Montgomery’s book is a poem in five cantos of heroic couplets related to the history of the Moravian church in Greenland and the first voyage to the region in 1733. He has also written a preface and appendix to this poem. James Montgomery was a Scottish-born hymn writer, poet and editor concerned with humanitarian causes, was the son of a pastor and missionary of the Moravian Brethren. • Hans Egede. This is one of the first definitive volumes about Greenland. Hans Egede was a Dano-Norwegian Lutheran missionary who who launched mission efforts to Greenland and worked extensively with the Inuit in Greenland.
