A RARE MANLY MACDONALD EARLY CHRISTMAS CARD

Christmas Greeting Card circa 1930's

Flat: 12-3/4 x 5-1/2 inches

Folded: 6-1/2 x 5-1/2 inches

Image: 4-7/8 x 3-3/4 inches

The printed Manly MacDonald "The Red Mill" image, slightly out of register when printed, was trimmed to size and mounted on the Christmas Greeting Card. Unsigned inside. Printed on back is Manly MacDonald's name and Canadian Artists Series 25130

According to the previous owner, the original oil painting was painted in the 1930s at Bruce’s Mill (his father watched him do some of his work around the Mill) and this Christmas Card is a reproduction of that painting.

Research indicates there are at least three other oil paintings/sketch views of this subject "The Red Mill" we could find but none the same as this one. The three others are titled by the auction houses as "Bruce’s Mill, 10 Miles North of Unionville" (oil), "The Red Mill, Winter" (oil), "Bruce's Mill, Unionville" and "York Mills" (colour sketch). References for these three others can be provided upon request. Could not find the original oil or any print cards for our "The Red Mill" image. Probably one of a kind print today, clearly a rare print by an important Ontario artist. A most interesting discovery.
