First edition. 5-1/ x 8-1/2 inches, (16), [9]-389pp., original dark blue cloth, bevelled edges and corners bumped with crushed spine ends, small tears to top of spine. Two portraits and two folding maps. With title page and frontispiece of Thomas Ridout. The often lacking erratum slip is tipped in after the title page. Bright gilt lettering on the spine and front board. With fold out maps. Contents very clean. Very good condition overall.

The body of the book consists mainly of letters written from school, from London and on campaign in Canada and his participation in the War of 1812 to his father.

2 fldg maps (one of Great Lakes area showing battles of 1812, other of Indiana, Ohio and Virginia showing capture of Thos. Ridout by the Shawanese Indians), facsimile of letter, index. The body of the book consists mainly of letters written from school, from London and on campaign in Canada and his participation in the War of 1812 to his father. Included are his accounts of Prevost's Plattsburg Expedition in which he served as an assistant commissary. Contains much on the War of 1812. The appendix gives a dictionary of the Shawnees language.
