This mini collection includes only three items. Two are extremely scarce and important to any Lloyd C. Douglas or religious collection. There is a Douglas Typed Letter Signed (TLS) and his very first publication copyright 1905, More Than a Prophet. There is also an ALS to Mr. Howard, 31 July 1926, providing him with his autograph.

Lloyd Cassel Douglas, was an American minister and author including The Robe (1942) and over a dozen other religious and moral issues inspired novels and was one of the most popular novelists of his period,

Douglas once said in an interview, that "If my novels are entertaining I am glad, but they are not written so much for the purpose of entertainment as of inspiration."

Douglas's main purpose was to present a Christian thesis in the form of a novel and include in the gospel narratives the aspect of human interest

His first published book when Douglas was about 28, a year after he was married was “More Than A Prophet” Published by W B Conkey Company, Chicago, Copyright 1905. An important first book and extremely scarce. Only 3 copies found anywhere.

Later novels included, Magnificent Obsession (1929), at the age of 52. It was a huge success, although the work had been rejected by two major publishers, Harper & Brothers and Doubleday. Issued by a small religious publishing house of Willett, Clark and Colby, Magnificent Obsession sold in a few years three million copies. In the 1930s, Douglas was one of the most popular novelist in the United States. His other novels include The Robe (1942), which was made into a lavish Technicolor film in 1953, starring Richard Burton, Jean Simmons, and Victor Mature. It received five Academy Award nominations and won two. The novel remained at the head of the bestseller list for nine months.

• TLS to Eustace B. Griffith, 9 April 1943, re The Robe and the effect of Jesus’ influence on the people in Judea and Galilee.

• ALS to Mr. Howard, 31 July 1926, providing him with his autograph.

• More Than a Prophet (Chicago: W.B. Conkey Company, Chicago, [1905], (10), [11]-177pp. Douglas’s first book, black cloth with gilt lettering of title, author and a cross, on the front cover and spine, some rubbing and separation at the front hinge, author’s name on a label affixed to the front free endpaper. Fair condition. A very scarce book.
