An interesting letter printed from John Mitchell presenting a number of negative points about what else - taxes, in this case animals.
For the beginning of an article which takes just over a full column, beginning: "As the author of a pamphlet entitled 'The Present State of Great Britain & North America, etc...." John Mitchell wrote the book "The Present State Of Great Britain And North America, With Regard To Agriculture, Population, Trade, and Manufactures, impartially considered" published in London in 1767, the same yer as the letter from him to the 'to the printer of the London Chronicle contained in this newspaper. His book contains;
Part 1. treats of the trade and population of Great Britain Part 2. conditions in North American particularly in Canada, as being of great potential value Part 3. Criticism of the governments taxation policy (Stamp Act 1765) TPL 413.
Appropriately this newspaper has a half penny tax stamp on bottom left of page 2. The stamp act pertaining to this item is "For every such pamphlet and paper contained in a half sheet, or any lesser piece of paper, which shall be so printed, a stamp duty of one half penny for every printed copy thereof.
Good. Item #708
