First edition. 4-1/2 x 7 1/8 inches. viii,(4), [1]-477pp. Original green cloth with spine sunned and paper label. Some very light spotting on the first couple of pages, otherwise in very good condition and a very nice copy. Historical material on Quebec, with a guide to the city as it was at the time. The most interesting aspect of the work is the 14 plates, lithographed by the early Canadian lithographer and publisher, Adolphus Bourne.

No map(s) is called for in the list of plates and is not present in this copy. Though one was printed by the publishers for the work, only a small percentage of copies of this book actually had the map(s) bound in of which this is not one.

With accounts of the discovery of America and the voyages of Cabot, Verazzano, Cartier and Champlain, the establishment of the various religious orders and institutions, the physical appearance of the city during the colonial period, its architecture, the sieges of Quebec in 1629, 1690, 1711, 1759, and 1775, &c.

Robert Auchmuty Sproule transferred from drawings by Alexander Jamieson Russel, W.S. Sewell and Captain Alderson to stone for lithographing; they were printed by Adolphus Bourne for Hawkins’s 1834 picture of Quebec; with historical recollections.
