Overall condition is near fine. Published by subscription. An excellent complete copy of an 1866 book about Susanna Moodie’s husband, John W.D. Moodie. Much of this book concerns South Africa, where the author spent ten adventurous years; a full account of this period had been published in London in 1835. In 1832 Moodie emigrated to Canada, where he spent the rest of his life. Several of the essays and sketches here were first published in a journal he published with his wife, Susanna Moodie, who is best remembered for her classic narrative of life in the Canadian wilderness, Roughing It in the Bush (1852).

"Major Moodie left South Africa in 1829 and settled in Canada in 1832. " The bulk of the work recounts his 10 years in South Africa. One chapter is devoted to Dunbar's service during the Napoleonic Wars.“ quoted from Mendelssohn: South African Bibliography, vol. 2, page 51.
