First UK edition. 2 volumes, 20cm, Vol. 1; [2] (prelim ads.)xx,[1]-293,[1],[2 ads]. Vol. 2; [4], [1]-294, [2 ads].

In the original extra blind decorated green cloth, pictorial gilt decorations on the upper covers, gilt titles and decorations on the spines, stamping faded, corners and spine crushed. Hinges are cracked on both volumes.

Volume 2 on the front end paper has a full page inscription about someone placing “poppy petals” (none there now) inside the pages from 1 to 53 and dated 1863?. There are sporadic stains on these pages as a result. Still, a good set in original unrestored green cloth binding of the first UK edition.

Susanna Moodie wrote these series of twenty-eight sketches, based on her difficult experiences and what to share these, thus she was "prompted by the hope of deterring well-educated people, about to settle in this colony, from entering upon a life for which they were totally unfitted by their previous pursuits and habits." Nevertheless, as reviewed in The Colonial Magazine, it is "written in a lively, amusing and most interesting style, full of incident and adventure."

"Roughing It in the Bush, became a best seller in both England and the United States. One of the characters in the book was called Little Addie and Mrs. Moodie based it on her daughter Agnes." from Toronto Star, Dec26,1981 article
