This is a highly detailed history of Isaac Jogues, a.k.a "Black Robe", heroic 17th century Jesuit missionary / martyr who was captured and tortured by the Iroquois, enslaved by the Mohawks, rescued by the Dutch and returned to France...only to become "homesick" for the New World and the Indians. "I go, but I shall never return", were his words when he came back to America. A Mohawk tomahawk finally made him a martyr. His life was was the basis for the movie "Black Robe". A vast canvas unfolds in this swift moving story of the earliest days of New York and Canada as Hurons, Algonquins, Iroquois, and Mohawks battled for supremacy and survival, and French, English and Dutch struggled to plant their tiny settlements. It may seem politically incorrect today, but it is full of colorful information and period details. Excellent for a student of Religion, Native Americans, or American History.
