From its founding date the Canadian Federation of University Women (CFUW) has stated as one of its purposes, To arouse and sustain among members an intelligent interest in all aspects of public affairs in the political, social, cultural" Lord Durham Rare Books Inc. (LDRB) is an antiquarian dealer in 19th century items of which one is “women”. LDRB and CFUW share similar thinking that there is a whole new opportunity to know more about women in early 20th century and the 19th century. LDRB and CFUW also agree that active “collecting" of historically significant items (books, prints, autographed signed letters (ASL), photos and other ephemera can be a very rewarding and enjoyable manner in which to learn and acquire more knowledge . CFUW members have enjoyed the privilege of education and learning. Probably as a result of this education they have been exposed to the incredible writings of 19th century women such as Traill, Moodie, EP Johnson to name but a few. More dynamic women of the 19 century include; Marguerite de Roberval, Madame de la Tour, The Founders of the Ursuline Convent, Mademoiselle Mance, Madelaine de Vercheres, Sarah Delfield, Laura Secord, Abigail Becker, Sarah Maxwell. Many CFUW members have already been exposed to the experiences of these pioneer trail blazers and would be interested at the opportunity to own a piece of their Herstory. Many more CFUW members may be inclined to become exposed to the amazing women and their contribution to the history of women in Canada.Click here for a list of items currently available. The CFUW local associations meetings are held to discuss numerous subjects often social issues of revelence to the status of women and girls. Before Nellie McClung and the Famous 5's accomplishments there have been many other women who have responded to and dealt with these issues in many different ways and under much much more restricted circumstances. Understanding this can be very inspirational and motivating. For example E. Pauline Johnson promoted cultural and social issues with her books, poetry and on-stage performances in both her Native and European dress. This approach was very much break through and controversial requiring a very special and determined person. Understanding this and appreciating this makes collecting and owning a copy of her first book "White Wampum" 1895 that much more special. "When Johnson visited England in 1894, in addition to giving recitations, she arranged for the publication of her first book, The White Wampum (1895). This collection focuses on First Nations themes, particularly emphasizing strength of character and resolve to retain traditional beliefs. Johnson was writing for her stage performances in a voice meant for the stage. By our present-day standards, her writing style might be criticized as being excessively theatrical, but in her time this passionate language appealed to a wide audience." LDRB will offer books about these Canadian women and help CFUW members start a collection or to expand their present collection. You will be helping to financially support the CFUW Charitable Trust as well! The Trust will receive 10% of the retail price on every item purchased by a CFUW member. What an enjoyable way to help support post-graduate studies while you enjoy your collecting!!
